The Arthropod Genomics Symposium X (AGSx) Symposium 2025 sessions are coming up in April and May. General session information is below, with full details of speakers and presentations at https://i5k.github.io/agsx2025.

Session 1: Insect Genome Biology and Evolution.

Organized by Lindsey Perkin, USDA-ARS, Insect Control and Cotton Disease Research Unit, College Station, TX USA.

Tuesday, April 8, 2025 from 12pm-2pm EDT

Session 2: Genomic Advances in Non-Model Arthropod Pests.

Organized by Perot Saelao and David Luecke, USDA-ARS, Veterinary Pest Genetics Research Unit, Kerrville, Texas USA

Tuesday May 13, 2025 from 12pm-2pm EDT

These sessions are FREE to attend, but registration at https://rb.gy/hwtk2x is required to receive webinar Zoom links.

  • Upcoming: AGS 2025 Scott Emrich organizing

bioinformatics/vector Anton Nekrutenko (Penn State, new BRC; https://brc-analytics.org/)

Workshop by Scott Cain. Lindy McBride (Princeton/Culex) for the main vector talk

Virtual format: Time TBD

  • Other items from the community germane to the cc (e.g. relevant EBP updates, new funding opportunities, meetings/conferences)
  • EBP meeting updates:
    • Universal genome note system is progressing.
    • EBP life newsletter with conservation theme is released. https://www.earthbiogenome.org/newsletter
    • Several manuscripts released or in progress (conservation genomics, JEDI)
    • There will be NO BG2025 meeting. There will be a VGP meeting at Rockefeller at the end of September. The focus is on phase 1 VGP species, but the meeting is open to all. It will be a workshop-style meeting to solve problems.
    • VGP is creating a ‘guide tree’ to support vertebrate-wide genome alignment.
    • New regional node application is up on website: https://www.earthbiogenome.org/regional-node-application
    • Some discussion about ‘associated projects’ - e.g. individual labs generating 10-20 genomes that are EBP compliant. EBP is trying to formalize what these are/how they would join or submit, e.g. under a regional node.
    • Sequencing and assembly standards will be updated soon - cobionts and sex chromosomes. They are looking for new members.
    • Annotation group: working on preliminary list of metadata to provide with annotations
    • Analyses group: They’re working on training activities. The i5k training working group may want to look into what this group is doing.
    • GoaT report - Cibele pointed out that their duplication checking tool is able to reduce costs for projects by detecting duplications prior to spending the money for sequencing. Will start sending updated reports to project coordinators soon.
    • Talk: Genomics of Brazilian Biodiversity (GBB). Including environmental DNA. Public-private governance
  • Featured Discussion: Recruitment of i5k members and leadership positions
  • i5k tasks and personnel. Now that we have defined tasks and roles, how should we go about recruiting for these tasks?
    • Have working groups come up with a 2-3 sentence description of the role that will be posted on the website
    • Create web page
    • Where to advertise
  • Marc has drafted an I5k Governance charter. Should we post alongside the new recruitment effort to help clarify membership?
  • Should we re-name the i5k coordinating committee meetings to “i5k community meetings” as this would 1) more accurately reflect the scope of the meetings, and 2) may attract more people?

NEXT MEETING: 16 April 2025
