i5K Community Meeting

  • ANNOUNCEMENT OF NAME CHANGE: Monthly ‘coordinating committee’ meetings will henceforth be known as “Community Meetings”
  • NOTE: September 17 meeting designated as this year’s “Annual Meeting”
  • Working group highlights (can change order)
    • Community building and outreach (Brad). Nothing in the works until AGS-X starts up again.
    • Standards (Eric). Two manuscripts close to submission to Genetics or G3. On hold due to new restrictions from USDA on international co-authors.
    • Exec committee (Monica)

    • Training (Sue)
  • Working group additional items (example: AGS organization discussion from the Outreach WG)
  • Other items from the community germane to the cc (e.g. relevant EBP updates, new funding opportunities, meetings/conferences)
  • Featured Discussion: Comment period and Adoption of i5k Charter/Bylaws
    • A copy of the draft document can be found at i5k Governance Charter (for member comment)
    • Comment period will be open through July 25
    • Voting period will be announced afterwards
    • Annual meeting: this meeting time is not good for academic members. Consider moving the meeting outside 10-1 Eastern Wednesdays (MWF are heavy teaching days). Perhaps an hour or 2 earlier to still accommodate European members. Or a longer meeting, to get partial attendance from more members.
  • Additional Discussion: Recruitment for i5k leadership positions
    • We have a new webpage on i5k roles: https://i5k.github.io/i5k-community-roles
    • Feedback is welcome.
      • Social media coordinator and newsletter coordinator - define how these roles interact. Perhaps broaden social media coordinator role to media coordinator role.
      • Training working group - we need a new working group chair. Exec committee can nominate new chairs per the bylaws… David is willing to take this on. Exec committee will go through the process.
      • How can we better facilitate networking and scientific development of junior members; ways for established scientists to find new collaborators? Is there a role for this? Job posting board? How do we create the space to have conversations? What are other RCNs/societies doing to facilitate conversations? The exec committee should discuss how to push the networking aspect of i5k forward.

      • Add QR code to recruitment slide! Perhaps a tinyurl.
    • Marc and Monica will coordinate on email to the community for commenting on bylaws and recruitment doc
