AGENDA

i5K Coordinating Group

18 December 2024

11:00-12:00 EST

Meeting Chair: Marc Halfon

Attending: David Molik, Monica Poelchau, Kevin Hackett, Marc Halfon, Eric Tvedte, Marian Goldsmith, Chris Childers, Josh Benoit, Anna Childers, Rob Miller, Brian Scheffler

Regrets:

  • New member introductions
  • CC member cameo of the month: David Molik
  • Working group highlights (can change order)
    • Community building and outreach (Brad). Not much activity, but planning for AGS-X is ongoing.
    • Standards (Monica)
      • Continued work on white paper and meta-analysis
      • Marc drafted a paper for authors and reviewers on genome reports
    • Exec committee (Monica) - No news.
    • Training (Sue)
    • Genome Project Coordination (Duane) - No progress this month. Monica can send information to Anna.
  • Working group additional items (example: AGS organization discussion from the Outreach WG)
  • Other items from the community germane to the cc (e.g. relevant EBP updates, new funding opportunities, meetings/conferences)
    • EBP:
    • Some discussion on access and benefits sharing - wording or translation to scientists is still being refined
    • Sample working group is starting to tackle question of scaling in phase 2 - how to collect and process many thousands of samples per year? Can we even completely know what we’re sequencing? New standards out.
    • Annotation working group has new tool recommendations out
  • Featured Discussion:
  • Biodiversity Genomics 2024 i5k discussion recap - 20 minutes
    • Discussion outcomes and possible next steps for the i5k community
    • Consolidated notes from the breakout rooms: Consolidated notes from breakouts
    • What, if anything, is preventing you from creating new arthropod genomes or working with existing arthropod genomes?
      • Linking groups with expertise of different aspects of genome sequencing and analysis - this point has always been an i5k focus
      • The points that were brought up are relevant for the community building/outreach, standards, and exec committees
      • It would be good to encourage more meetings between those new to the field and experts
      • How to make ‘moments of magic’ happen?
    • If you are not yet active in the i5k organization, what would motivate you to contribute?
      • A lot of the suggestions fit into the scope of the community building and outreach WG, but they are already over taxed. Need sub-working groups and more people to join them
      • We should work on the specific action items that were suggested and have ready prior to AGS. The exec committee will take the lead.
      • Marc is a perfect example of i5k’s current approach to recruiting - if you happen to talk to a cc member and mention it, we pull you in. Otherwise it’s difficult to understand how to join.
      • Meetings are a crucial place to recruit
      • Incentives to join:
        • Make more opportunities available for students and postdocs
        • Have a certificate for people once they accomplish a task? Contributor board with people’s names? Figure out what is useful or meaningful.
        • What are meaningful ways to be recognized?

Wishing everyone a joyful Holiday season and a Happy New Year!!
